How did propaganda become marketing success?
In 1879, Max Weber, a German sociologist and German sociologist, first coined the term "propaganda". The Greek word "praopagos", which means "to talk well," was the source of the phrase. The word came from the Latin verb "propere," meaning "nearby" or "at hand," and the noun "agogos," meaning "speech or discourse." It is a systematic attempt at shaping attitudes and behaviors.
George Orwell, British journalist wrote in "Propaganda," a 1928 book that he published. "To understand the true nature and purpose of propaganda, it is not the intention make people believe any thing; it is only to change their beliefs... It is designed to make them agree with one thing instead of the other."
Edward Bernays (1891 –1955), who was Sigmund Fréud's nephew. The psychoanalyst and nephew of Sigmund Freud became famous after he invented "public relations" back in 1922. He said that "the conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in a democratic society." He started the public relations agency "Bernays & Company", where he remained until 1955.
Bernays created an "engineering consent” technique that influenced public opinion via advertising and publicity campaigns from the 1920s through the 1950s. His methods were adopted later by mass media companies like Newsweek, CBS News, NBC News and Time Magazine. Bernays began to work closely with corporations, government agencies, and individuals after World War II. Johnson & Johnson was among his clients.
His most famous client was the tobacco business. Philip Morris, who he assisted in developing a campaign against smoking was the most prominent client. The campaign resulted from the SurgeonGeneral recommending that smoking be banned indoors. In 1965, the Cigarette Advertising Act was adopted. This bans any cigarette advertisement in print media such as newspapers and television.
He also gave advice on how to deal during the Great Depression with the growing labor movement. Bernays advised that the president declare "war on Hunger" and use federal government's power in order to ensure adequate food. This strategy made government appear like a caring father figure and helped President Franklin D. Roosevelt win re-election.
Bernays promoted the idea of "radio-listening" in order to increase radio sales. In the 1930s, he introduced "branding" as well as "advertising". He believed that customers could be motivated by appealing to their emotional side, and making them feel unique. So, he promoted the slogan: "Have your got what it take?" 1933: Encouraged women to invest in war bonds.
In 1944, he established the political action committee "Young People for Freedom". The group's goal was to encourage Americans aged 18-30 to vote Republican. Dwight Eisenhower was elected president in 1952 after Bernays' efforts were successful.
In 1953, Bernays persuaded the CIA to stage a coup in Iran, replacing Mohammad Mosaddegh with Shah Reza Pahlevi. This was done to stop Mosaddegh's nationalization of Iranian oil fields. Bernays wrote articles extolling the new regime in praise after the coup.
Bernays received many other awards throughout his career.
