The Suez Canal Changed the World
Ferdinand de Lesseps was the man who built the Suez Canal. His goal was to connect Europe with Asia. He needed to create a canal that would cross the Isthmus of Suez, which is the narrowest point. This would allow ships from Europe to reach India or China. The process involved building several locks and dams. He went to Egypt many times to negotiate with Khedive Ismail Pasha for financing the project. After he returned from Egypt, he discovered that Napoleon III had been defeated and had been replaced by The Second Empire. This was not a good idea as it would have cost too much. It took him three long years before the French government would fund the project. After the British lost the Battle of Omdurman in Sudan War 1859, they signed a Treaty allowing them to access the Red Sea via Suez Canal. The canal opened in 1869.
This project opened up trade routes and increased international commerce. It led to the development in many countries, including South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
In addition, people can travel much more quickly than ever thanks to the Suez Canal. Before the construction of the Suez Canal, it took weeks to cross Isthmian Peninsula. It now takes days. People could visit Paris, London or Rome without the need to cross dangerous storms or endure long sea voyages. Furthermore, the Suez Canal made it possible to travel between North America (Europe) by reducing the distance by almost 3,000 mi. These features made the Suez Canal a major transportation project.
The Suez Canal caused problems as it divided the Ottoman Empire in two, ultimately leading to the First World War. During the war, Britain used the Suez Canal for its attack on Germany. The Germans attacked Britain using their version. The Suez Canal was re-established under Egyptian control. However, the British held the land on either end.
After the Second World War, both sides continued to trade through the Suez Canal until the Arab-Israeli War in 1948. Both sides didn't want to fight each other initially, as they were afraid the other might use force. Eventually, Israel captured the Sinai peninsula from Egypt in 1967, and the Suez Canal was closed to all shipping except for military vessels. The four-year-old closure ended when President Sadat reopened Suez Canal to civilian traffic in 1972.
