How did propaganda become marketing history?

When Max Weber, German sociologus and German sociologist came up with the term propaganda from the Greek phrase "praopagos", the word means "to speak well", the term was first used. The Latin verb "propere" (meaning "nearby"/ "at hand) and the noun ("agogos"), meaning "speech/discourse," gave rise to the word. It refers to "a systematic effort to shape attitudes or behavior."

In his book "Propaganda," published in 1928, British journalist George Orwell wrote: "To understand the true nature of propaganda, we must realize that it is not the intention to make people believe anything; it is only the intention to change their beliefs...It is intended to make them accept one thing rather than another."

Edward Bernays (1891 –1955) was Sigmund Freud’s nephew. In 1922, he coined the term "public Relations". He stated that the conscious and intelligent manipulations of the organized opinions and habits of the masses was an essential element of a democratic society. He founded "Bernays & Company" in 1927. This was where he worked until 1955.

Bernays invented an "engineering permission" technique, which allowed him to influence public opinion through publicity and advertising campaigns. His methods were later adopted in mass media such as Time Magazines, CBS News and NBC News. Bernays worked closely with corporations and government agencies after World War II to influence public opinion. His clients included Johnson & Johnson and General Electric as well as Procter & Gamble and Coca-Cola.

His most notable client was the tobacco industry. Philip Morris was his most notable client. He developed a campaign against tobacco smoking in 1939. This campaign was recommended by the Surgeon general. The Cigarette Advertising Act was passed in 1965. It prohibited any advertisement for cigarettes in print media including newspapers and television.

He also gave advice on how to deal during the Great Depression with the growing labor movement. Bernays suggested that the president declare a "war on hunger" and use the federal government's power to ensure adequate food supplies. This strategy made the government seem like a loving father figure, and it helped the president win his re-election bid in 1936.

Bernays promoted the idea of "radio-listening" in order to increase radio sales. He introduced the concept "branding", "advertising" and other concepts in the early 1930s. He believed that consumers could feel special and be influenced through appealing to their emotions. So, he promoted the slogan: "Have your got what it take?" He encouraged women to buy war bonds in 1933.

In 1944, he created a political action committee called "Young People for Freedom." This group was created to encourage Americans between the ages of 18 and 30 to vote Republican. Bernays' efforts proved successful when Dwight Eisenhower won the presidential election in 1952.

Bernays convinced the CIA to stage a coup against Iran in 1953. Shah Reza Pahlevi replaced Mohammad Mosaddegh. This was necessary to stop Mosaddegh nationalizing Iranian oil fields. Bernays wrote articles in praise of the new regime, calling it a "moderate," a "progressive", and a "modernized" one after the coup.

Bernays also received numerous awards throughout his career.
