In 1988 a plane air crash happened at a Air France airshow stunt. A Airbus 320-111 descended too low during a low fly-by and tragically killed three members of the public. Unfortunately dangerous descents don't only happen at airshows and this programme will also look at how uncontrolled descents during a commercial craft's runway landing, can have deadly consequences for everyone on board.
How on November 14th, 1970 a DC9 carrying the Marshall University Football Team was approaching to land at the airport in Huntington, West Virginia. But the aircraft doesn’t stop its descent at 1240 feet as instructed. And how on 20th December 1995 American Airlines Flight 965 crashes on its approach to Cali, Colombia.

Frequently Asked Questions
What lessons can history teach us?
Three lessons can be learned from history. First, you must do it yourself when you change the world. It is important to make sure that people are prepared for change when you try to improve their lives. Third, when you change the future, you have to make it better.
The first lesson is that there are two ways to change the world. One is fight for it. When you fight for it, you focus on winning and lose sight of why you started fighting in the first place.
Although you cannot control the reactions of people to your ideas, you can control how they are presented. If you want to persuade someone, you'll eventually fail. If you want to inspire others to act, you will succeed.
Most great movements began because somebody had an idea and decided to act upon it. So whether you're creating change or reacting to it, the best way to make your mark is to follow these three rules: Be clear about what you want, be honest about where you come from, and be brave enough to go where nobody else has gone before.
The second lesson is that we all have a choice. We have two options: we can wait for life to happen to you or we can make it happen. This means we must decide what kind of life we want to lead. Are we willing to wait for someone to allow us to live? Do we want to control our destiny?
I'd argue that we're living in a golden age right now. There is more opportunity than ever, which makes it exciting. People feel empowered to create their futures, and that's exciting.
This creates a problem. It's difficult for people to know exactly what they want or how to achieve it.
Let's assume you want to purchase a house. Or you could just sit back and wait for someone to give you a gift card to Home Depot. You can also ask yourself: "What would my dream job be?" You can then search for a job where you can do it. Final step: Apply for financing.
Let's suppose you want to travel the globe. Perhaps you are asking, "Where do i want to go?" You'd then begin saving money, researching different countries online and speaking with friends. Then, you book a trip.
Let's say that you don't have a clear idea of what you want. You would most likely do one of these things. This is how you can increase your chances for getting what you want. It may seem silly, but it works.
The third lesson is the ability to always improve the future, regardless of what happens next. It is very simple. Our choices affect who and what we become.
The trick to success is to look back at history and learn from their mistakes and successes.
If you don’t believe that you have anything to contribute, then you are already behind. You must believe in yourself and that you are more than you believed.
Start with what you already know. Start small and move on. Reflect on the lessons that you've taken from your experiences throughout your life. Which areas have you struggled with? What has been your greatest success? How have you overcome obstacles?
Remember that you are the only one who can limit your potential. No matter how much anyone tells, you can achieve anything you set your mind.
Benjamin Franklin stated, "Nothing can work unless it works."
What can our failures teach us?
You can learn from your mistakes. It will teach you something. Even more important, you can correct any mistakes you make. Don't fret about the little stuff, because mistakes are okay. We all make mistakes.
You might feel embarrassed if you've made a mistake, but it doesn't matter whether you feel bad. It's how you deal with your mistakes that matters most. You'll be unable to deal with them if they become a problem. But if you view them as opportunities for growth, you'll come out stronger on the other side.
The best way to overcome a mistake is to acknowledge and move past it. It is important to not dwell on the mistake and instead focus on the next steps. Keep moving.
Don't be discouraged by your failures. Instead, focus on your strengths and work towards improving yourself. Learn from your mistakes and be better tomorrow.
Successful Inventions Made By Accident
Inventors make mistakes. How we deal with those mistakes is what determines whether our inventions succeed or fail.
Invention is not an accident. Every invention was planned. There are no accidental inventions.
An invention can be described as a deliberate act. An intentional decision to create something new. It solves a problem. A solution that improves the quality of life.
To be successful inventing is to understand that nothing happens by chance. Instead of trying to avoid making mistakes, learn from them.
We would love to tell you that invention is simple, but it's not. Invention requires hard work and persistence. It's not a quick fix. It takes time.
You will need to spend a lot time thinking about ideas and problems. What are people concerned about? What are they looking for?
These are questions that you should ask yourself. These questions will help you decide what type of product or service to develop next.
To achieve this, it is important to forget about any preconceived ideas. Don't make assumptions about what people want or need. You have to listen carefully to your customers and potential customers.
It is important to find out what your clients want. It is not what they think they want.
Once you understand what they want, you must devise a method to deliver it. This is where invention starts.
Who was the first to say that those who don’t learn from history are ignorant?
While we all would love to live in an ideal world that everyone learns from past mistakes, it is not possible to learn from our own mistakes.
Experience it wrong is the best way to learn.
The most serious mistake is to try to make it right the first go.
As long as you keep making changes, you'll eventually find out why you made the change in the first place.
You might even discover that you could have done it better the first time.
You shouldn't give up on trying again. It means you've learned a lot.
While you may not be able avoid making mistakes, there are ways to minimize them. That is what will make the difference in success or failure.
Acknowledging your mistakes is the first step. Then look at them objectively and ask yourself: "What did I learn?"
Your mistakes will only be lessons if your honesty is honest. They're opportunities to grow.
Thomas Edison went through exactly the same thing. He failed many times before inventing the light bulb.
He didn't let his failures discourage him. He used every failure as an opportunity to improve the design.
He developed the most well-known form of lighting we have today.
So, if you fail, don't get discouraged. Learn from your mistakes. Use them.
And then, you can try again.
Do we have to learn history in order to avoid making the same mistakes as before?
History repeats itself, because we continue to make the same mistakes repeatedly. We fail to learn from our mistakes. We don't change. We become complacent. We settle for mediocrity.
Because we continue to believe the same old stories, history repeats itself. We have been taught to believe there are unchanging laws and fixed truths. We cannot change them.
This prevents us thinking critically. From questioning authority. To challenge assumptions. When we do not question, we stagnate. And when we don't grow, we stagnate. When we stagnate we make the same mistakes again and again.
Because we make the same mistakes, history doesn't have to repeat itself. History repeats because we refuse lessons from our mistakes and continue making them over and again.
It is possible to break the cycle of history repetition. You can change the way you see the world, and your perspective by realizing that nothing is fixed in stone. Nothing is permanent. Everything is subject to constant flux.
The key to breaking the cycle of uncertainty is acceptance. Accepting the possibility of things going wrong. Accepting the possibility that we might not succeed. Accepting failure as a possibility.
Accept the fact that you might not reach your goals. But to accept that, you should strive to improve anyway.
To hold on to the past is to be certain. You'll never move forward if you cling to the idea that there are fixed truths.
If you want freedom, you have to let go. If you want progress, you need to let go of control.

How To
The Suez Canal Changed the World
Ferdinand de Lesseps built the Suez Canal in 1869. He wanted to link Europe and Asia with his project. To do so, he had the Isthmus of Suez (the narrowest part) built to allow ships to cross from Europe to reach India. This involved the construction of several locks, dams and tunnels. He went to Egypt many times to negotiate with Khedive Ismail Pasha for financing the project. But, upon his return to France, it was discovered that Napoleon III has been overthrown and the Second Empire has taken over, with no interest in such a large-scale project. It took him three long years before the French government would fund the project. After the British were defeated at Battle of Omdurman, during the Sudan War in 1859 they signed a treaty to allow them access to Red Sea via Suez Canal.
This project opened up trade routes, increased international commerce, and led to the development and integration of many countries around world, including Canada and Australia.
The Suez Canal enabled people to travel much more efficiently than before. Before the construction of the Suez Canal, it took weeks to cross Isthmian Peninsula. It now takes days. People could visit Paris, London or Rome without the need to cross dangerous storms or endure long sea voyages. Additionally, the Suez Canal reduced the distance between North America & Europe by nearly 3,000 miles, making it more convenient for people to travel back and forward. These benefits made the Suez Canal one the most important transportation projects.
But the Suez Canal was also problematic because it divided up the Ottoman Empire, which eventually led to World War I. During the war the British used Suez Canal in an attack on Germany. But the Germans attacked Britain using their canal version. Although the Suez Canal fell under Egyptian control at the end of World War II, the British maintained their control over the land to either side.
After the Second World War the Suez Canal remained a vital part of global commerce until the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict. Both sides were initially reluctant to oppose each other because they feared the other would use force. Israel finally captured the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt in 1967. After that, the Suez Canal was shut to all shipping except military vessels. The four-year-old closure ended when President Sadat reopened Suez Canal to civilian traffic in 1972.
