How did marketing history become propaganda?

When Max Weber, German sociologus and German sociologist came up with the term propaganda from the Greek phrase "praopagos", the word means "to speak well", the term was first used. The word came from the Latin verb "propere," meaning "nearby" or "at hand," and the noun "agogos," meaning "speech or discourse." It refers to "a systematic effort to shape attitudes or behavior."

George Orwell, a British journalist, wrote in his 1928 book, "Propaganda": "To understand propaganda's true nature, we need to realize that it does not have the intent to make people believe anything. It is only the intention of changing their beliefs...It is meant to make them accept one thing over another."

Edward Bernays (1891 – 95), who was Sigmund's nephew, and psychoanalyst. He became famous when he created the term "public relations" (1922). He stated that the conscious and intelligent manipulations of the organized opinions and habits of the masses was an essential element of a democratic society. In 1927, he founded the public relations firm "Bernays & Company," where he worked until 1955.

Bernays invented an "engineering permission" technique, which allowed him to influence public opinion through publicity and advertising campaigns. His methods were adopted later by mass media companies like Newsweek, CBS News, NBC News and Time Magazine. Bernays worked closely with corporations and government agencies after World War II to influence public opinion. Johnson & Johnson (General Electric), Procter & Gamble; Coca-Cola; Ford Motor Company; U.S. Department of Defense; American Tobacco Company; DuPont, Rayonier and the United States Chamber of Commerce were just a few of his clients.

The tobacco industry was his most important client. Philip Morris was his most notable client. He developed a campaign against tobacco smoking in 1939. This campaign was recommended by the Surgeon general. This led to the passage of the Cigarette Advertising Act in 1965, which prohibited any cigarette advertisement in print media, including magazines, newspapers, and television.

He also gave advice on how to deal during the Great Depression with the growing labor movement. Bernays suggested that President Franklin D Roosevelt declare a “war on hunger” and use the federal governments power to ensure sufficient food supplies. This strategy made it look like the government was a father figure and helped the president to win re-election in 36.

Bernays convinced the CIA to stage a coup against Iran in 1953. Shah Reza Pahlevi replaced Mohammad Mosaddegh. This was necessary to stop Mosaddegh nationalizing Iranian oil fields. Bernays wrote articles extolling the new regime in praise after the coup.
