How did marketing history turn into propaganda?
The term "propaganda" was first used in 1879 when German sociologist Max Weber coined the word from the Greek word "praopagos" which means "to speak well." The Latin verb propaganda, which can be translated as "nearby", or "at hand," and its noun "agogos, which can translate to "speech" or discourse, are the sources of the word. It refers to "a systematic effort to shape attitudes or behavior."
George Orwell, a British journalist, wrote in his 1928 book, "Propaganda": "To understand propaganda's true nature, we need to realize that it does not have the intent to make people believe anything. It is only the intention of changing their beliefs...It is meant to make them accept one thing over another."
Edward Bernays (1891 - 1995), who served as Sigmund Freud's nephew and psychoanalyst, became famous after he invented the term "public relations" in 1922. He said, "The conscious and intelligent manipulations the organized habits or opinions of the masses is an essential element in a democratic democracy." He started the public relations agency "Bernays & Company", where he remained until 1955.
Bernays created an "engineering consent” technique that influenced public opinion via advertising and publicity campaigns from the 1920s through the 1950s. His techniques were later adopted and used by mass media organizations such as Time Magazine. CBS News. NBC News. Newsweek. Bernays became a close collaborator with corporations and government agencies in order to influence public opinion after World War II. Some of his clients included Johnson & Johnson, General Electric, Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, Ford Motor Company, U.S. Department of Defense, American Tobacco Company, DuPont, Rayonier, and the United States Chamber of Commerce.
The tobacco industry was his most important client. He helped Philip Morris to develop a campaign against smoking in 1939. The Surgeon General recommended that indoor smoking be prohibited. The Cigarette Advertising Act, which banned any advertisement for cigarettes in print media (magazines, newspapers, television) was passed by the Senate in 1965.
He also advised President Franklin D Roosevelt on how to deal with the growing labor movement during the Great Depression. Bernays suggested to the president that he declare a "war against hunger" and use the federal government's ability to ensure adequate food supplies. This strategy helped the president win reelection in 1936 by making the government appear benevolent and fatherly.
Bernays promoted the idea of "radio-listening" in order to increase radio sales. In the 1930s, Bernays introduced the concepts of "branding", and "advertising". He believed that consumers can be influenced by appealing directly to their emotions and making them feel special. For example, he promoted the slogan "Have you got what it takes?" 1933: Encouraged women to invest in war bonds.
He founded a political committee, "Young People for Freedom," in 1944. This group had the goal of encouraging Americans aged 18 to 30 to vote Republican. Dwight Eisenhower was elected president in 1952 after Bernays' efforts were successful.
Bernays convinced CIA in 1953 to stage a coup d'etat in Iran. Shah Reza Pahlevi would replace Mohammad Mosaddegh. This was to stop Mosaddegh acquiring Iranian oilfields. Bernays published articles after the coup praising the new regime for being "moderate", "progressive,"and "modernized".
