How did propaganda become marketing history?

The term "propaganda" was first used in 1879 when German sociologist Max Weber coined the word from the Greek word "praopagos" which means "to speak well." The Latin verb "propere" (meaning "nearby"/ "at hand) and the noun ("agogos"), meaning "speech/discourse," gave rise to the word. It refers to "a systematic effort to shape attitudes or behavior."

George Orwell, British journalist wrote in "Propaganda," a 1928 book that he published. "To understand the true nature and purpose of propaganda, it is not the intention make people believe any thing; it is only to change their beliefs... It is designed to make them agree with one thing instead of the other."

Edward Bernays (1891 – 1995), who was Sigmund Freud’s nephew and psychoanalyst became well-known after he inventing the term "public relation" in 1922. He believed that "the conscious manipulation of the organised habits and opinions by the masses is an integral part of a democratic nation." He founded "Bernays & Company" in 1927. This was where he worked until 1955.

Bernays devised a technique called "engineering consent" to influence public opinion using advertising and publicity campaigns. This was from the 1920s to 1950s. His techniques were later adopted and used by mass media organizations such as Time Magazine. CBS News. NBC News. Newsweek. Bernays started working closely with government agencies and corporations after World War II. Johnson & Johnson was among his clients.

His most famous client was the tobacco business. He helped Philip Morris to develop a campaign against smoking in 1939. The Surgeon General recommended that indoor smoking be prohibited. The Cigarette Advertising Act was passed in 1965. It prohibited any advertisement for cigarettes in print media including newspapers and television.

He also advised President Franklin D Roosevelt on how to deal with the growing labor movement during the Great Depression. Bernays suggested that President Franklin D Roosevelt declare a “war on hunger” and use the federal governments power to ensure sufficient food supplies. This strategy made it look like the government was a father figure and helped the president to win re-election in 36.

As the popularity of radio increased, Bernays started promoting the idea of "radio listening" to increase sales of radios. In the 1930s, he introduced "branding" as well as "advertising". He believed that people could be influenced if they appealed to their emotions and made them feel special. So, he promoted the slogan: "Have your got what it take?" He encouraged women to buy war bonds in 1933.

In 1944, he established the political action committee "Young People for Freedom". This group was created to encourage Americans between the ages of 18 and 30 to vote Republican. Dwight Eisenhower was elected president in 1952 after Bernays' efforts were successful.

Bernays convinced CIA in 1953 to stage a coup d'etat in Iran. Shah Reza Pahlevi would replace Mohammad Mosaddegh. This was done to stop Mosaddegh's nationalization of Iranian oil fields. Bernays wrote articles extolling the new regime in praise after the coup.

Bernays has received numerous other awards throughout his professional career.
