How did propaganda become marketing success?

The term "propaganda," which was first used in 1879 by Max Weber, a German sociologist, was derived from the Greek word Praopagos which means "to communicate well". The Latin verb propaganda, which can be translated as "nearby", or "at hand," and its noun "agogos, which can translate to "speech" or discourse, are the sources of the word. It's a "systematic attempt to influence attitudes and behavior."

George Orwell, a British journalist, wrote in his 1928 book, "Propaganda": "To understand propaganda's true nature, we need to realize that it does not have the intent to make people believe anything. It is only the intention of changing their beliefs...It is meant to make them accept one thing over another."

Edward Bernays (1891 – 1995), who was Sigmund Freud’s nephew and psychoanalyst became well-known after he inventing the term "public relation" in 1922. He said that "the conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in a democratic society." He created the public relations firm Bernays & Company in 1927. He worked there until 1955.

Bernays devised a technique called "engineering consent" to influence public opinion using advertising and publicity campaigns. This was from the 1920s to 1950s. His methods were adopted later by mass media companies like Newsweek, CBS News, NBC News and Time Magazine. Bernays worked closely with corporations and government agencies after World War II to influence public opinion. Johnson & Johnson (General Electric), Procter & Gamble; Coca-Cola; Ford Motor Company; U.S. Department of Defense; American Tobacco Company; DuPont, Rayonier and the United States Chamber of Commerce were just a few of his clients.

The tobacco industry was his most important client. In 1939, he helped Philip Morris develop a campaign against smoking, which resulted in the Surgeon General recommending that smoking should be banned indoors. The Cigarette Advertising Act was passed in 1965. It prohibited any advertisement for cigarettes in print media including newspapers and television.

He also gave advice on how to deal during the Great Depression with the growing labor movement. In 1944, he established the political action committee "Young People for Freedom". This group was created to encourage Americans between the ages of 18 and 30 to vote Republican. Dwight Eisenhower won 1952 the presidency thanks to Bernays efforts.

In 1953, Bernays persuaded the CIA to stage a coup in Iran, replacing Mohammad Mosaddegh with Shah Reza Pahlevi. This was done to stop Mosaddegh's nationalization of Iranian oil fields. Bernays wrote articles praiseing the new regime after the coup as "moderate," progressive, and modernized.

Bernays was the recipient of many other awards over his entire career.
