The Suez Canal Changed the World
Ferdinand de Lesseps designed the Suez Canal to connect Europe to Asia in 1869. To do so, he needed to build a canal across the Isthmus of Suez (the narrowest point), allowing ships from Europe to reach India and China. The process involved building several locks and dams. He traveled to Egypt several times and negotiated financing with Khedive Ismail Pasha. He returned to France and found that Napoleon III was dead. The Second Empire had taken over the project. He was there for three years before the French government offered to finance the project. After the British were defeated at Battle of Omdurman, during the Sudan War in 1859 they signed a treaty to allow them access to Red Sea via Suez Canal.
The project opened up trade routes to increase international commerce and helped many countries develop around the world, including Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Japan and South Africa.
The Suez Canal enabled people to travel much more efficiently than before. It used to take weeks or months for people to cross the Isthmian Peninsula before it was constructed. Now it takes just days. People could visit Paris, London or Rome without the need to cross dangerous storms or endure long sea voyages. Furthermore, the Suez Canal made it possible to travel between North America (Europe) by reducing the distance by almost 3,000 mi. These features made the Suez Canal a major transportation project.
The Suez Canal, however, caused problems. It divided the Ottoman Empire into 2 parts. This led to the First World War. The British used the Suez Canal as a weapon against Germany during World War II, while the Germans attacked Britain with their own version of the canal. The Suez Canal was re-established under Egyptian control. However, the British held the land on either end.
The Suez Canal was an important part global trade even after the Second World War. It remained so until 1948 when the Arab-Israeli war began.
