The Suez Canal Changed the World
Ferdinand de Lesseps built the Suez Canal in 1869. He wanted to link Europe and Asia with his project. To do this, he built a canal across Isthmus of Suez. It allowed ships from Europe to travel to India and China. It required the construction and maintenance of several locks as well as dams. He made several trips to Egypt, where he negotiated with the Khedive Ismail Pasha to finance the project. But, upon his return to France, it was discovered that Napoleon III has been overthrown and the Second Empire has taken over, with no interest in such a large-scale project. It took him three years before the French government agreed to fund the project. After the British lost the Battle of Omdurman in Sudan War 1859, they signed a Treaty allowing them to access the Red Sea via Suez Canal. The canal opened in 1869.
This project helped open up trade routes and increase international commerce, leading to the development of many countries around the globe, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, South Africa, and the United States.
In addition, the Suez Canal allowed people to travel much faster than before. It used to take weeks, if not months, to cross the Isthmian Peninsula. Now, it takes only days. People could travel to places such as Paris, London and Rome without having to go through dangerous storms or long sea voyages. The Suez Canal also reduced the distance between North America, Europe and almost 3,000 miles, making it much easier to travel back and forth. These features made the Suez Canal a major transportation project.
Unfortunately, the Suez Canal created problems for the Ottoman Empire by dividing it into two parts. This eventually led to the First World War. During World War I, the British used Suez Canal to attack Germany. However, the Germans used their version of Suez Canal against Britain. After the end of the war, the Suez Canal came under Egyptian control, although the British still controlled the land on either side of it.
After the Second World War the Suez Canal remained a vital part of global commerce until the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict. Both sides didn't want to fight each other initially, as they were afraid the other might use force. Eventually, Israel captured the Sinai peninsula from Egypt in 1967, and the Suez Canal was closed to all shipping except for military vessels. This closure was in effect for four years, until President Sadat opened the canal to civilian traffic in 1973.
