The Suez Canal Changed the World
Ferdinand de Lesseps built the Suez Canal in 1869. He wanted to link Europe and Asia with his project. To do this, he built a canal across Isthmus of Suez. It allowed ships from Europe to travel to India and China. This required the construction of several locks and dams. He traveled to Egypt several times and negotiated financing with Khedive Ismail Pasha. But, upon his return to France, it was discovered that Napoleon III has been overthrown and the Second Empire has taken over, with no interest in such a large-scale project. It was three years later that the French government funded the project. In 1859, after the British were defeated at the Battle of Omdurman during the Sudan War, they signed a treaty allowing them access to the Red Sea via the Suez Canal, which opened in 1869.
