This programme follows the strike by goldminers at the Lena Mine in Siberia - which was horrifically quelled with the loss of hundreds of lives. Then, just before the outbreak of the 1914 Great War, the programme describes the final days of Tsar Nicholas and the Romanov dynasty, their lives blighted by their failure to produce a healthy male heir... their reputation in tatters thanks to Rasputin, and later the millions of casualties of a World War they could never hope to win.
This film was first broadcast: 15 Jul 1990
