The Suez Canal Changed the World

Ferdinand de Lesseps created the Suez Canal in 1869. This was his dream to connect Europe and Asia. He needed to create a canal that would cross the Isthmus of Suez, which is the narrowest point. This would allow ships from Europe to reach India or China. The process involved building several locks and dams. He made several trips to Egypt, where he negotiated with the Khedive Ismail Pasha to finance the project. He returned to France and found that Napoleon III was dead. The Second Empire had taken over the project. It took him three long years before the French government would fund the project. After the British had been defeated at the Battle Of Omdurman during Sudan War, 1859 saw them sign a treaty which allowed them to enter the Red Sea through the Suez Canal. It was completed in 1869.

This project was instrumental in opening up trade routes and increasing international commerce.

In addition, people can travel much more quickly than ever thanks to the Suez Canal. It used to take weeks or months for people to cross the Isthmian Peninsula before it was constructed. Now it takes just days. People could travel to places such as Paris, London and Rome without having to go through dangerous storms or long sea voyages. Furthermore, the Suez Canal made it possible to travel between North America (Europe) by reducing the distance by almost 3,000 mi. These benefits made the Suez Canal one the most important transportation projects.

The Suez Canal, however, caused problems. It divided the Ottoman Empire into 2 parts. This led to the First World War. The British used the Suez Canal as a weapon against Germany during World War II, while the Germans attacked Britain with their own version of the canal. Although the Suez Canal passed under Egyptian control following the end the war, both the British and Egyptians still held the land.

After the Second World War, both sides continued to trade through the Suez Canal until the Arab-Israeli War in 1948. Both sides were reluctant to take action against the other at first because they feared that one side might use force. Eventually, Israel captured the Sinai peninsula from Egypt in 1967, and the Suez Canal was closed to all shipping except for military vessels. The Suez Canal was closed to civilian traffic for four more years after being shut down by Egypt's military forces. President Sadat eventually reopened it in 1973.
