Historian Max Adams sets out to retrace the life of Nelson's best friend from his early days as an officer in the Bunker Hill conflict in Boston through to his tragic last years as Commander in Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet. Along the way, Adams discovers more of the relationship between the two men from their time together in the Mediterranean and West Indies. A veteran of three of the great fleet actions of his era - The Glorious 1st June, St Vincent and Trafalgar - Cuthbert Collingwood might justifiably be regarded as Britain's foremost naval hero... were it not for his modesty and the well documented demise of his friend Nelson, next to whom he lies in St Paul's Cathedral

Frequently Asked Questions

What lessons can history teach us?

There are three lessons we've learned from history. The first is that you have to do it yourself if you want to change the world. Second, it is essential to prepare people for change if you want to transform their lives. Third, you can't change the past without changing the future.

The first lesson we can learn is that there are only two ways to transform the world. One is fighting for it, the other is creating it. If you fight for it you lose sight on why you started to fight.

Although you cannot control the reactions of people to your ideas, you can control how they are presented. You'll inevitably fail if you set out to convince someone of something. If you want to inspire others to act, you will succeed.

People had an idea, and they decided to take action. This is how most great movements started. So whether you're creating change or reacting to it, the best way to make your mark is to follow these three rules: Be clear about what you want, be honest about where you come from, and be brave enough to go where nobody else has gone before.

The second lesson we learn is that everyone has the option to choose. You can either let your life happen or you can choose to make it happen. This means we need to choose what kind of life you want. Is it better to decide what kind of life we want or wait for someone else? Or do we want to take charge of our destiny?

I believe that we are living in the golden age. There's more opportunity than ever before, creating a lot of excitement. People feel empowered, which is exciting.

It can also cause problems. It is essential to determine what you want, and how you can get it.

Let's say, for instance, that you are looking to buy a home. You could either sit back and expect someone to gift you a Home Depot gift certificate. You could also ask yourself "What would you love to do?" Next, find a job that allows you to do this. Next, apply for financing.

Let's pretend you want to travel all over the globe. The question you might be asking yourself is "Where do I want go?" Then, you'd start saving money, researching countries online, talking to friends, etc. And finally, you'd book a flight.

Let's pretend you didn’t know what your goal was. In this case, you'd probably end-up doing one of the things. You can increase your chances to get what you want by asking these questions. It may seem silly, but it works.

The third lesson is the ability to always improve the future, regardless of what happens next. It's easy. Your choices influence who you are and what you become.

So the trick is to use history as a guide, to learn from others' mistakes and successes, and keep improving until you succeed.

You're already behind if you don't think you have anything to offer the world. You must believe you are better than you think you are.

If you don't know where to begin, start with what you know. Start small and go from there. Take stock of the lessons you've learned in your entire life. What have you failed to do? What were your successes? What have you done to overcome obstacles?

Last but not least, remember that no one can stop you from reaching your full potential. No matter what others say, you are capable of doing anything you set your mind to.

Benjamin Franklin stated, "Nothing can work unless it works."

What can we learn by Abraham Lincoln's example?

Abraham Lincoln said, “I am slow to understand; very fast to forget.”

He understood the importance of learning and knew that he would eventually need to let go of old habits in order to embrace new ones.

The same applies to our businesses. No matter how much we plan for success in the future, there will always be times when we are unable to move forward and end up stuck in a rut.

It's important to keep learning and growing. If we are to achieve the pinnacle, we must keep learning.

Lincoln had the right mindset. He recognized that while he could become more effective in his business, he couldn't stop learning.

There are two types entrepreneur. Those who stay busy and those who stay smart.

Those who stay active focus on growing their business. They work on marketing strategies, product development, customer service, and other daily tasks.

They may feel like they've accomplished something meaningful, but often they're missing the mark. These entrepreneurs will not achieve sustainable growth unless they are focused on becoming smarter.

What is the difference between successful entrepreneurs and average entrepreneurs? Ability to quickly adapt to changing situations.

Successful entrepreneurs are always looking for ways to improve the products and services they offer when faced with difficulties.

However, the average entrepreneur will stick with outdated methods that do not work. They are unwilling to change their course of action until their business collapses.

It is essential to learn both the art of adapting and self-reflection in order for success.

What can we learn from history to avoid repeating past errors?

History repeats itself, because we continue to make the same mistakes repeatedly. We fail to learn from our mistakes. We don't change. We become complacent. We settle to mediocrity.

History repeats itself when we believe the same old stories. Our culture has conditioned us to believe there is an immutable law and a fixed truth. They are immutable laws and truths that we can't change.

This is a way to stop us from thinking critically. From challenging authority. From challenging assumptions. If we don’t ask questions, we don’t grow. When we don't learn, we stagnate. We repeat the same mistakes when we stagnate.

History doesn't repeat itself, because we continue to make the same mistakes. History repeats because we refuse lessons from our mistakes and continue making them over and again.

You can end the cycle of history repetition by changing the way that you view the world. By understanding that nothing is permanent, you can see the possibilities. Nothing is permanent. All things are in constant flux.

The key to breaking the cycle of uncertainty is acceptance. Accept that things might go wrong. Accepting that failure may be possible. Accepting that failure is possible.

Accept that you may not reach your goals. Accept that you may not achieve your goals. However, it is important to keep working towards improving.

If you hold fast to certainty, you'll always be stuck in the past. If you believe there are only certain truths, it will be impossible to move forward.

You must let go if you want to be free. If you want to progress, you have to give up control.

What are the three most important lessons from history?

There are many examples in history of how we can learn from our failures. These lessons can be applied to the challenges of business today and turned into opportunities for growth.

The past has taught us that there is always a better way. There is always someone who thinks out of the box and takes risks to make themselves stand out.

History has shown us that often it is the underdogs that succeed. If you ever feel lost, overwhelmed or stuck, remember the times when the underdog prevailed.

Look to the past and find ways to bring the lessons forward into the future. Learn from others' failures and successes.

These lessons can help increase your success rates.
