In September 1944, two US submarines were in a desperate race against time to rescue hundreds of men barely alive. The submarines had returned to the location of a devastating attack on two Japanese cargo ships. What they didn't know was that the ships had been carrying Australian and British prisoners of war who had been in shark-infested waters for four days. It was only by chance that the men were discovered and a rescue mission was mounted. But, out of 2,000 men who had gone into the water, just 127 would be saved. A crewman on each submarine filmed the rescue mission and their amazing footage is featured here, plus interviews with some of the survivors and their rescuers.

This film was first broadcast: 25 Apr 1999
