The Stylistic Choice of Black Misinterpretation in Art | Our History

In this roundtable talk, poet, writer, and producer Demii Lee Walker speaks to Michael Chibueze (Instagram @_roiarts_) and Jasmin Jahmeelah (Instagram @jah.meelah) about common mistakes made by artists depicting Black people in their works, and their individual journeys and experiences as people of colour in the art space. The topic was sparked by a Twitter thread that gained traction on social media. It includes a few examples of the depictions, such as the omission of lighter palms when drawing the hands of Black people or giving characters bright pink lips, something that resembles the outdated racist practice of blackface. https://twitter.com/rainbowmancer/status/1140111224597831681

Chibueze and Jahmeelah’s art is also featured during the talk, giving viewers a chance to see their work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can learning about history stop us from repeating past mistakes?

History repeats itself because we keep making similar mistakes over and again. We fail to learn from our mistakes. We don't change. We become complacent. We settle in mediocrity.

History also repeats itself because we keep believing the same old stories. We are conditioned to believe in immutable truths and immutable rules. We cannot change them.

This is a way to stop us from thinking critically. The ability to question authority. From challenging assumptions. If we don’t ask questions, we don’t grow. And when we don't grow, we stagnate. And when we stagnate, we repeat the same mistakes.

But history isn't the same because we continue making the same mistakes. History repeats itself because we refuse to learn from our mistakes and instead continue to make the same ones over and over.

Change your perception of the world and yourself to stop the cycle. Nothing is unchangeable. Everything is in constant flux.

The key to breaking the cycle is to embrace uncertainty. Accepting the possibility of things going wrong. To accept that we may not succeed. Accepting failure as a possibility.

Accept that you may never achieve your goals. Acceptance is a part of learning, but it's important to continue improving.

If you hold fast to certainty, you'll always be stuck in the past. You can't move forward if your beliefs are fixed.

You must let go if you want to be free. If you want progress, you need to let go of control.

What are the three most important lessons from history?

History is filled with examples of how mistakes can be learned from. These lessons can be applied to the challenges of business today and turned into opportunities for growth.

We have learned from the past that there are always other ways to do things. There is always someone who thinks out of the box and takes risks to make themselves stand out.

History has shown us that often it is the underdogs that succeed. So when you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or even lost, look back to those times when the underdog won.

Learn from the past and use the lessons to improve your future. Learn from the failures and successes of others.

These lessons can help increase your success rates.

What lessons can history teach us?

Three lessons can be learned from history. First, you must do it yourself when you change the world. Second, it is essential to prepare people for change if you want to transform their lives. You can only change the future if it is better.

The first lesson is to recognize that there are two options for changing the world. The first is to fight for it. The second is to make it happen. When you fight for it, you focus on winning and lose sight of why you started fighting in the first place.

Although you cannot control the reactions of people to your ideas, you can control how they are presented. If you try and convince someone to do something, it will be a failure. But if you set out to inspire someone to action, you'll succeed.

Most great movements began because somebody had an idea and decided to act upon it. Whether you are creating change or responding to it, these are the three best ways to make your mark. Be clear about what is important to you, be open about where you came from, and dare to go where no one else has.

The second lesson is that we all have a choice. You can either let your life happen or you can choose to make it happen. This means that it is up to us to decide how we want our lives to be. Do we wait for someone else to permit us to live? Or do we want to take charge of our destiny?

I believe we are living in a golden era. There are more possibilities than ever before, which has created a lot of excitement. It's exciting that people feel empowered and able to create their futures.

But it also creates a problem. Because not everyone knows exactly what they want or even how to get it, it's important to figure out what you want and find a way to get it.

Let's assume you want to purchase a house. Or you could just sit back and wait for someone to give you a gift card to Home Depot. You could also think about what you would love to do. You can then search for a job where you can do it. Apply for financing.

Let's suppose you want to travel the globe. Perhaps you are asking, "Where do i want to go?" The next step is to start saving money, research countries online, talk with friends, etc. The final step is to book a flight.

Let's suppose you don't know what you want. In that case, you'd probably end up doing one of those things anyway. This is how you can increase your chances for getting what you want. It might seem ridiculous, but it's true.

The third lesson is that regardless of what happens next, there are always ways to improve the future. This is because it's simple. Our choices shape who we are and who we become.

It is important to take inspiration from past experiences, learn from mistakes and succeed until you are successful.

If you don’t believe that you have anything to contribute, then you are already behind. You have to believe that you're better than you thought you were.

Don't worry if you don't know where you should start. Start small and then build on it. Take stock of the lessons you've learned in your entire life. What have you failed to do? What has been your greatest success? How did you overcome obstacles?

Don't forget to remember that only you can limit your potential. No matter what anyone says, you can do anything you put your mind to.

Benjamin Franklin said, "Nothing will be successful unless you do."

What Can We Learn From Abraham Lincoln?

Abraham Lincoln said, “I am slow to understand; very fast to forget.”

He was aware of the importance to continue learning, knowing that there would be a time when he would have to relearn his old habits and adopt new ones.

This is true for our businesses as well. No matter how hard we plan for success there will be times where we run into roadblocks that cause us to get stuck in a rut.

That's why it's crucial to seek new ways to grow and evolve constantly. If we do nothing else, we must continue to learn, even after we reach the pinnacle of success.

Lincoln was a good example of the right attitude. He realized that he could not stop learning, even though he was able to be more productive in his business.

There are two types entrepreneur. Those who stay busy and those who stay smart.

Those who stay active focus on growing their business. They focus on customer service and marketing strategies.

They may feel like they've accomplished something meaningful, but often they're missing the mark. They won't be able to sustain their growth if they don't also work smarter.

What sets successful entrepreneurs apart? Ability to quickly adapt to changing situations.

Entrepreneurs who are successful find ways to improve their products and services when they face challenges.

The average businessperson, however, will continue to use outdated methods that don't work. They refuse to change course until their business fails.

For success, you need to be skilled in both adaptation and self-reflection.

How To

What can we learn from the mistakes made by our ancestors in the past?

We've been here before. There's nothing wrong in learning from the past. It may even help humanity weather another crisis.

We can make it if we are open-minded and seek out lessons that will help us move forward.

The problem is when we fail to learn from the past and refuse to acknowledge that human nature hasn't changed much since the beginning of time.

There is much wisdom in the old ways but we tend ignore them because they don't fit with our beliefs. We choose to stay stuck with the things we know, rather than embrace changes we find hard.

But the world continues to change and our lives are constantly evolving. Our environment is becoming more complex. We have more problems.

This means that we also need to make changes. We are more vulnerable to failure if we can't rely on the strategies that have worked in the past.

We lose sight of our values when we do this and we become slaves to the habits we have created.

Our brains are able to adapt to situations that existed thousands years ago. These days aren’t over forever.

The future is not set in stone. There's still room for improvement.

Humans still have the ability to accomplish amazing feats. We can create amazing technologies. To discover new frontiers and explore uncharted territories.

Yet, we tend to limit our abilities. To fear evolution. To reject evolution. To believe that what worked yesterday will be the same tomorrow.

This trend is being fought by some people. They view themselves as rebels against the status quo. Fighting against the establishment. Against the system.

They are rebels who pride themselves on challenging the conventions of society. They challenge the conventions of society.

They rebel against rules and regulations. They hate conformity. They don't care much about social expectations. They think they are superior to everyone else.

To them, I say "Good Luck!"

It will be your lifeline!

Because it's a tough battle. These forces are strong and drive mainstream society.

You will find that the majority of people aren't interested in your viewpoint. No interest in listening to your point.

It doesn't matter if you're brilliant or well-intentioned. Your ideas might not catch on with the masses.

Your message may not be heard. That's precisely why you'll need strange lessons from the past.

Because this is where the real power lies. This is where you truly can make a difference.

This is where you can inspire others to follow their dreams. This is where you can create movements that transform society.

Let me ask you a question. Are you willing to live up to the expectations of others? Or would it be better to decide your own path.
