This photograph was taken during the battle of Somme, and shows a British Vickers machine gun crew wearing PH-type anti-gas helmets. This event took place during July 1916. Since World War I, chemical weapons have caused more than one million casualties globally. Chlorine, phosgene and mustard gas were among the chemicals used. Gas masks during world war I were effective.
