To writers and researchers like Arthur C Clarke, libraries are worlds in themselves. Thus it is not surprising that Clarke has come across some maps, manuscripts and coded communications which have been tested and frustrated the most expert of map experts and codebreakers. Is the Vinland Map the most exciting cartographic discovery of the century? If it is genuine, this may well be an understatement. The map, now owned by Yale University in the USA, is said to have been drawn in the early 15th century before Columbus made his landfall in the New World.
