This biography on one of the principal figures in the Irish War of Independence, 1916-21, traces his life from his childhood in County Cork, to his early years in London, his involvement in the Easter Rising of 1916, subsequent imprisonment, and revolutionary leadership in the Anglo-Irish War, the following treaty negotiations, and his assassination at the age of 31. Shot on actual locations, and blending rare archival footage with a compelling, on-screen narration by renowned actor Kenneth Griffith, this programme details the ideas and history that shaped Irish nationalism. The documentary was commissioned in 1973 for Lord Lew Grade's ATV, but he refused to screen it once he'd seen the finished article. It was first shown on TV by BBC Wales in 1993, and networked on BBC2 in 1994.
This film was first broadcast: 1973/1993
