To make this second film about Afghanistan, reporter Sandy Gall returned there in the summer of 1984 to find out who, if anyone, is winning the war which began five years previously when Soviet forces invaded the country. Sandy and a small camera crew spent two months with the Afghan rebels and travelled more than 400 miles in the south-east of the country filming the fighting. His report includes some remarkable footage of the attempted ambush of a Russian convoy and contains interviews with defecting Russian soldiers who tell of the horrors they have seen and describe the low morale of the Soviet troops
This film was first broadcast: 23 Oct 1984
