Deep beneath the Earth's crust are two massive blobs of rock that resemble a pair of hands cupping the Earth's core. The word massive is an understatement as these formations spread thousands of miles in either direction within the Earth's crust and make up 600 miles of the Earth's 1,800-mile deep mantle. Geologists have spent the last four decades trying to determine the source of these gigantic continent-sized formations that have been discovered under Africa and the Pacific Ocean.
