As the Roman Empire reeled under the Barbarian invasion, Christianity clung to corners of Ireland and Italy, where monasticism developed and monks became both missionaries and civil servants of the new Europe. Briefly it seemed that men like Pope Gregory II St Boniface and the Emperor Charlemagne had succeeded in realising the dream of a United Christian Europe.
